How to cut an audio file

1

Add the audio

Drop one MP3, WAV, M4A or other audio file on the box above. A player appears so you can listen to it.

2

Set the start and the end

Type the times, or play the file, pause where the clip should begin or end, and press the button that copies the playhead into the start or end field.

3

Cut and download

Choose MP3, WAV or M4A and press the button. The clip appears with its length and size, plays right there, and downloads as a new file.

How the cut works

The file is decoded into raw samples, only the stretch between your start and end is kept, and that stretch is encoded again in the format you picked. Because the cut is made on decoded audio, it lands at the time you typed rather than on the nearest MP3 frame, which is 1,152 samples long, about 26 ms at 44.1 kHz.

Encoding again costs a little quality, so an MP3 cut into an MP3 is lossy twice; choose 320 kbps, or WAV for no further loss. An MP3 clip can also come out a few hundredths of a second longer than you typed, because the encoder pads it; a WAV clip has exactly the length you set. One exception is an M4A with AAC audio cut into M4A: the AAC packets are copied without re-encoding, so nothing is lost, and the cut lands on an AAC frame boundary, 1,024 samples or about 23 ms at 44.1 kHz.

MP3 cutter questions

Can I cut an MP3 without losing quality?

Not as an MP3. This tool decodes the file and encodes the clip again, so an MP3 cut into an MP3 is lossy twice. Pick 320 kbps to keep the loss small, or WAV to keep the clip exactly as decoded.

How do I enter the start and end times?

As seconds (83), minutes and seconds (1:23) or hours, minutes and seconds (1:02:03). Decimals work too, for example 1:23.5. Leave the end empty to cut to the end of the file.

Why do I get an error when I press the button?

The start must come before the end, and both must lie inside the file. A negative time, an end before the start or a time past the length of the file is refused.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and cut by your browser in this tab, and nothing is stored. The MP3 encoder is a small script that loads from this site the first time you choose MP3; the audio itself is never sent.

Which files can I cut?

MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC files are accepted. Which of them open depends on the decoders in your browser; a file it cannot decode gives an error instead of a broken clip.

How large can the file be?

Up to 1 GB per file, one file at a time. To cut several pieces from one file, run it again with a new start and end; each cut downloads as its own file.
