Area converter

One hectare is exactly 10000 square metres, and one acre is exactly 43560 square feet. Enter an area, pick a unit and read it in all ten units at once.

The result and the table below it update as you type. Only the printed figure is rounded, to six significant digits, so a rounded value is never carried into the next conversion.

How to convert an area

1

Enter the area

Type a number in the first field. Negative values and decimals are accepted, so 12.5 and −3 both work.

2

Pick the two units

Choose the unit you have in the first menu and the unit you want in the second. The swap button reverses the two.

3

Read the table

The large figure is your answer. The table lists the same area in every other unit, so you can copy the one you need without converting again.

How area conversion works

Every unit on this page is defined from the square metre. A square kilometre is 1000000 m², a square centimetre 0.0001 m² and a square millimetre 0.000001 m². A hectare is exactly 10000 m², the area of a square 100 m on a side. The imperial units follow from the international yard of exactly 0.9144 m: a square yard is 0.83612736 m², a square foot 0.09290304 m² and a square inch 0.00064516 m². The acre is the international acre, 43560 square feet or 4046.8564224 m², and a square mile is 2589988.110336 m², which is 640 acres.

A conversion is a multiplication and a division: the value times the source unit's size in square metres, divided by the target unit's. Square metres to square feet is value ÷ 0.09290304, which is value × 10.7639 to six digits. The trap is using a length factor: one metre is about 3.28084 feet, but one square metre is about 10.7639 square feet, because both sides are scaled. The US survey acre, which differs slightly from the international acre, is not offered.

Area conversion questions

How many square feet are in a square metre?

One square metre is about 10.7639 square feet, because one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres. Multiply square metres by 10.7639 to get square feet, or multiply square feet by 0.09290304 to get square metres: 100 m² is 1076.39 ft², and 2000 ft² is 185.80608 m².

How many acres are in a hectare?

One hectare is about 2.47105 acres, and one acre is about 0.404686 hectares. Multiply hectares by 2.47105 to get acres, or acres by 0.404686 to get hectares: 10 ha is 24.7105 acres, and 5 acres is 2.02343 ha.

Is a square yard 3 square feet?

No. One square yard is 9 square feet, not 3, because area scales with the square of the length: 3 ft × 3 ft. In the same way 1 m² is 10000 cm², not 100, and 1 ft² is 144 in², not 12.

Do my numbers leave my device?

No. The unit tables are part of the page and the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. With the page already loaded, the converter also works offline.

How precise are the results?

Results are computed in double precision from exact factors and printed to six significant digits; the unit table shows twelve. Values below 1e-6 or at 1e15 and above switch to exponent form so they stay readable.
