Power converter

One mechanical horsepower is 745.7 watts, or 0.7457 kW, and 100 kW is 134.102 hp. Enter a power, pick a unit and read it in all eight units at once.

The result and the table below it update as you type. Only the printed figure is rounded, to six significant digits, so a rounded value is never carried into the next conversion.

How to convert a power

1

Enter the power

Type a number in the first field. Negative values and decimals are accepted, so 150 and 74.5 both work.

2

Pick the two units

Choose the unit you have in the first menu and the unit you want in the second. Check whether your horsepower figure is mechanical (hp) or metric (PS), because they differ by about 1.4 percent.

3

Read the table

The large figure is your answer. The table lists the same power in every other unit, so you can copy the one you need without converting again.

How power conversion works

Every unit on this page is defined from the watt, which is one joule per second. A kilowatt is 1000 W and a megawatt 1000000 W. A mechanical horsepower is defined as 550 foot-pounds-force per second. With the foot at 0.3048 m, the pound at 0.45359237 kg and standard gravity at 9.80665 m/s², that is exactly 745.69987158227 W. A metric horsepower (PS, or CV in French and Spanish) is 75 kilogram-force metres per second, which is exactly 735.49875 W.

A conversion is a multiplication and a division: the value times the source unit's size in watts, divided by the target unit's. Kilowatts to mechanical horsepower is value × 1000 ÷ 745.69987158227, which is value × 1.34102 to six digits. The BTU per hour uses the International Table BTU of 1055.05585262 J divided by 3600 s, about 0.293071 W, and the kilocalorie per hour uses the thermochemical kilocalorie of 4184 J. Engine ratings are also measured under different test standards, and this tool converts the unit only.

Power conversion questions

How many watts are in a horsepower?

One mechanical horsepower is 745.69987 watts, or 0.745700 kW. It comes from 550 ft·lbf/s, using 1 ft·lbf = 1.3558179 J. So 10 hp is 7.457 kW and 100 hp is 74.57 kW.

What is the difference between hp and PS?

Mechanical horsepower (hp) is 745.69987 W and metric horsepower (PS) is 735.49875 W, so 1 hp is 1.01387 PS. A car rated 150 PS delivers 110.325 kW, which is 147.9 hp. Check which one a rating uses before comparing two cars.

How many horsepower is 100 kW?

100 kW is 134.102 mechanical horsepower and 135.962 metric horsepower (PS). Multiply kW by 1.34102 for hp or by 1.35962 for PS.

How many BTU per hour is a kilowatt?

One kilowatt is 3412.14 BTU per hour, using the International Table BTU of 1055.05585262 J. A 1 hp motor therefore gives about 2544.43 BTU/h of heat equivalent.

Do my numbers leave my device?

No. The unit tables are part of the page and the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. With the page already loaded, the converter also works offline.
