One pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and one kilogram is 2.20462 pounds to six digits. Enter a weight, pick a unit and read it in all seven units at once.

The result and the table below it update as you type. Only the printed figure is rounded, to six significant digits, so a rounded value is never carried into the next conversion.

How to convert a weight

1

Enter the weight

Type a number in the first field. Negative values and decimals are accepted, so 72.5 and −3 both work.

2

Pick the two units

Choose the unit you have in the first menu and the unit you want in the second. The swap button reverses the two.

3

Read the table

The large figure is your answer. The table lists the same weight in every other unit, so you can copy the one you need without converting again.

How weight conversion works

Every unit on this page is defined from the kilogram. A gram is 0.001 kg, a milligram 0.000001 kg and a tonne 1000 kg. The pound is fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg. An ounce is one sixteenth of a pound, exactly 28.349523125 g, and a stone is 14 pounds, exactly 6.35029318 kg.

A conversion is a multiplication and a division: the value times the source unit's size in kilograms, divided by the target unit's. Kilograms to pounds is value ÷ 0.45359237, which is value × 2.20462 to six digits. Because the factors are exact, the only rounding is in the figure printed. The ounce here is the avoirdupois ounce used for food and body weight; the troy ounce used for gold and silver is a different unit and is not offered.

Weight conversion questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds to six digits, because one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 to get pounds, or multiply pounds by 0.45359237 to get kilograms: 70 kg is 154.324 lb, and 10 lb is 4.53592 kg.

How many grams are in an ounce?

One ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams, about 28.3495 g, and 16 ounces make one pound. So 8 oz is 226.796 g, and 5 oz is 141.748 g.

Is weight the same as mass, and what is a ton?

For everyday use, yes: kilograms, pounds and ounces are units of mass, and a scale that shows them reports mass, which is what this page converts. Strictly, weight is the force of gravity on a mass. The word ton is ambiguous, so the page offers the tonne, the metric unit of exactly 1000 kg; US and UK tons are not offered.

Do my numbers leave my device?

No. The unit tables are part of the page and the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. With the page already loaded, the converter also works offline.

How precise are the results?

Results are computed in double precision from exact factors and printed to six significant digits; the unit table shows twelve. Values below 1e-6 or at 1e15 and above switch to exponent form so they stay readable.
