Volume converter

One US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres, and one litre is 1000 millilitres. Enter a volume, pick a unit and read it in all twelve units at once.

The result and the table below it update as you type. Only the printed figure is rounded, to six significant digits, so a rounded value is never carried into the next conversion.

How to convert a volume

1

Enter the volume

Type a number in the first field. Negative values and decimals are accepted, so 2.5 and −3 both work.

2

Pick the two units

Choose the unit you have in the first menu and the unit you want in the second. The swap button reverses the two.

3

Read the table

The large figure is your answer. The table lists the same volume in every other unit, so you can copy the one you need without converting again.

How volume conversion works

Every unit on this page is defined from the litre. A millilitre is 0.001 L, a cubic centimetre is the same 0.001 L, and a cubic metre is 1000 L. The US units are fixed by the US gallon of 3.785411784 L, which is 231 cubic inches: a quart is a quarter of it (0.946352946 L), a pint an eighth, a cup a sixteenth (0.2365882365 L) and a fluid ounce a hundred and twenty-eighth (29.5735295625 mL). The Imperial gallon is a separate unit of exactly 4.54609 L. A cubic inch is exactly 16.387064 mL and a cubic foot is exactly 28.316846592 L.

A conversion is a multiplication and a division: the value times the source unit's size in litres, divided by the target unit's. Litres to US gallons is value ÷ 3.785411784, which is value × 0.264172 to six digits. Because the factors are exact, the only rounding is in the figure printed. The main trap is the word gallon: the US and Imperial gallons are different sizes, and the cup, quart, pint and fluid ounce offered here are all US units. Imperial pints and fluid ounces are not offered.

Volume conversion questions

How many litres are in a gallon?

One US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. Multiply US gallons by 3.785411784 to get litres, or divide litres by 3.785411784 to get US gallons: 5 gallons is 18.92705892 L, and 10 L is 2.64172 gal.

How many cups are in a litre, and how many millilitres in a cup?

One litre is 4.22675 US cups, and one US cup is exactly 236.5882365 millilitres. So 2 cups is 473.176473 mL, which is one US pint, and 250 mL is 1.05669 cups.

Is a US gallon the same as an Imperial gallon?

No. A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres and an Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 litres, so the Imperial gallon is about 20% larger. 10 US gallons is 37.8541 L, while 10 Imperial gallons is 45.4609 L. Check which gallon a figure refers to before converting.

Do my numbers leave my device?

No. The unit tables are part of the page and the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. With the page already loaded, the converter also works offline.

How precise are the results?

Results are computed in double precision from exact factors and printed to six significant digits; the unit table shows twelve. Values below 1e-6 or at 1e15 and above switch to exponent form so they stay readable.
