Data converter
One gigabyte (GB) is exactly 1000000000 bytes, while one gibibyte (GiB) is exactly 1073741824 bytes. Enter a size, pick a unit and read it in all ten units at once.
- 1 GB = 1000 MB
- 1 MB = 0.001 GB
The result and the table below it update as you type. Only the printed figure is rounded, to six significant digits, so a rounded value is never carried into the next conversion.

Common data size conversions
These tables are computed from the same factors as the converter. Read each one left to right: the first column is the value you start with and the second is its equivalent.

How to convert a data size
Enter the size
Type a number in the first field. Negative values and decimals are accepted, so 2.5 and 500 both work.
Pick the two units
Choose the unit you have in the first menu and the unit you want in the second. Decimal units (kB, MB, GB, TB) and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) are in the same menus. The swap button reverses the two.
Read the table
The large figure is your answer. The table lists the same size in every other unit, so you can copy the one you need without converting again.
How data size conversion works
Every unit on this page is defined from the byte. A byte is 8 bits, so a bit is 0.125 B. The decimal units use steps of 1000: a kilobyte (kB) is 1000 B, a megabyte (MB) 1000000 B, a gigabyte (GB) 1000000000 B and a terabyte (TB) 1000000000000 B. The binary units use steps of 1024: a kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 B, a mebibyte (MiB) 1048576 B, a gibibyte (GiB) 1073741824 B and a tebibyte (TiB) 1099511627776 B.
A conversion is a multiplication and a division: the value times the source unit's size in bytes, divided by the target unit's. Gigabytes to gibibytes is value × 1000000000 ÷ 1073741824, which is value × 0.931323 to six digits. Because the factors are exact, the only rounding is in the figure printed. The trap is that MB and MiB, GB and GiB, and TB and TiB look alike but differ: a mebibyte is about 4.9 percent larger than a megabyte, and a tebibyte about 10 percent larger than a terabyte. The page has the bit but no megabit unit.
Data size conversion questions
How many MB are in a GB?
One gigabyte is exactly 1000 megabytes on this page, because the decimal units step by 1000. So 2.5 GB is 2500 MB. In the binary units one gibibyte is 1024 mebibytes, so 1.5 GiB is 1536 MiB.
How many bits are in a byte?
One byte is exactly 8 bits. So 1 MB, which is 1000000 bytes, is 8000000 bits, and 1 KiB, which is 1024 bytes, is 8192 bits. To go from bits to bytes, divide by 8.
Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1000000000000 bytes, which is 931.32 GiB or 0.909495 TiB. Some operating systems count in steps of 1024 but print the result as GB, so the same drive appears as about 931 GB. Nothing is missing: the two numbers use different units. In the same way, 500 GB is 465.661 GiB.
Do my numbers leave my device?
No. The unit tables are part of the page and the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. With the page already loaded, the converter also works offline.
How precise are the results?
Results are computed in double precision from exact factors and printed to six significant digits; the unit table shows twelve. Values below 1e-6 or at 1e15 and above switch to exponent form so they stay readable.
