Pressure converter

One bar is exactly 100000 pascals, or about 14.5038 psi, and one standard atmosphere is exactly 101325 pascals. Enter a pressure, pick a unit and read it in all ten units at once.

The result and the table below it update as you type. Only the printed figure is rounded, to six significant digits, so a rounded value is never carried into the next conversion.

How to convert a pressure

1

Enter the pressure

Type a number in the first field. Negative values and decimals are accepted, so 2.2 and −0.5 both work.

2

Pick the two units

Choose the unit you have in the first menu and the unit you want in the second. The swap button reverses the two.

3

Read the table

The large figure is your answer. The table lists the same pressure in every other unit, so you can copy the one you need without converting again.

How pressure conversion works

Every unit on this page is defined from the pascal, which is one newton per square metre. A hectopascal is 100 Pa, a kilopascal 1000 Pa and a megapascal 1000000 Pa. A bar is exactly 100000 Pa, and a millibar is 100 Pa, so one millibar equals one hectopascal. A standard atmosphere is exactly 101325 Pa, and a Torr is exactly 1/760 of it, about 133.322368 Pa. The pound per square inch is 6894.757293168 Pa, and the millimetre of mercury on this page is 133.322387415 Pa.

A conversion is a multiplication and a division: the value times the source unit's size in pascals, divided by the target unit's. Bar to psi is value × 100000 ÷ 6894.757293168, which is value × 14.5038 to six digits. Because the factors are fixed, the only rounding is in the figure printed. The main trap is gauge versus absolute pressure: a gauge reading such as a tyre pressure is measured relative to the surrounding air, and this converter changes the unit only, without adding or subtracting the atmosphere.

Pressure conversion questions

How many psi are in a bar?

One bar is 14.5038 psi to six significant digits, because 1 psi is 6894.757293168 pascals and 1 bar is exactly 100000 pascals. Multiply bar by 14.5038 to get psi, or divide psi by 14.5038 to get bar: 2.2 bar is 31.9083 psi.

How do I convert psi to bar for tyre pressure?

One psi is 0.0689476 bar, so multiply psi by 0.0689476 to get bar. A tyre pressure of 32 psi is 2.20632 bar, which is also 220.632 kPa.

Is a bar the same as an atmosphere?

No. One standard atmosphere is exactly 101325 pascals, which is 1.01325 bar or 1013.25 hPa, while one bar is exactly 100000 pascals, which is about 0.986923 atm. The two differ by about 1.3 percent, so a pressure in atm and the same figure in bar are not interchangeable.

Do my numbers leave my device?

No. The unit tables are part of the page and the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. With the page already loaded, the converter also works offline.

How precise are the results?

Results are computed in double precision from fixed factors and printed to six significant digits; the unit table shows twelve. Values below 1e-6 or at 1e15 and above switch to exponent form so they stay readable.
