Data rate converter
A 100 Mbit/s connection moves at most 12.5 MB/s, because one byte is 8 bits. Enter a speed, pick a unit and read it in all twelve units at once.
- 100 Mbit/s = 12.5 MB/s
- 100 MB/s = 800 Mbit/s
The result and the table below it update as you type. Only the printed figure is rounded, to six significant digits, so a rounded value is never carried into the next conversion.

Common data rate conversions
These tables are computed from the same factors as the converter. Read each one left to right: the first column is the speed you start with and the second is its equivalent.

How to convert a data rate
Enter the speed
Type a number in the first field. Decimals are accepted, so 12.5 and 0.5 both work.
Pick the two units
Choose the unit you have in the first menu and the unit you want in the second. Internet plans and speed tests use bits per second; file managers and download managers use bytes per second. The swap button reverses the two.
Read the table
The large figure is your answer. The table shows the same speed in every other unit, from bit/s to GiB/s, so you can copy the one you need.
How data rate conversion works
Every unit on this page is defined from the bit per second. A kilobit per second is 1000 bit/s, a megabit per second 1000000 bit/s and a gigabit per second 1000000000 bit/s. A byte is 8 bits, so 1 MB/s is 8 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s. The binary units count in powers of 1024: 1 KiB/s is 8192 bit/s, 1 MiB/s is 8388608 bit/s, which is 8.388608 Mbit/s, and 1 GiB/s is 8589934592 bit/s.
A conversion is a multiplication and a division: the value times the source unit's size in bit/s, divided by the target unit's size. Because the factors are exact, the only rounding is in the figure printed. The page converts a rated speed. It does not measure your connection, and the speed you get in practice is lower than the rate on the plan because of protocol overhead, wireless signal strength and the server at the other end.
Data rate questions
How many MB/s is 100 Mbit/s?
100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s. Divide a speed in megabits per second by 8 to get megabytes per second: 8 Mbit/s is 1 MB/s, 1 Gbit/s is 125 MB/s and 1000 Mbit/s is the same 125 MB/s.
Why do internet plans use bits and file sizes use bytes?
Network links have long been rated in bits per second, the number of signal bits they carry, while files are stored and counted in bytes. A plan sold at 100 Mbit/s shows up as at most 12.5 MB/s in a download window, which is easy to mistake for a slower line.
What is the difference between MB/s and MiB/s?
MB/s is 1000000 bytes per second and MiB/s is 1048576 bytes per second. So 1 MiB/s is 1.048576 MB/s and 8.388608 Mbit/s, and a 12.5 MB/s line shows as about 11.92 MiB/s in software that counts in binary units.
Why does a speed test show a different number from my download?
A speed test usually reports megabits per second, while a browser or download manager shows bytes per second, often MiB/s. The same rate looks eight to nine times smaller in bytes: 100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s, or 11.92 MiB/s. The real rate is also lower because of protocol overhead and the server's own limit.
Is kb/s the same as kbit/s?
In this converter the symbol is kbit/s for kilobits and kB/s for kilobytes, and the capital B matters. 1000 kbit/s is 125 kB/s. An informal “kbps” normally means kilobits per second, but check the source.
Does my input leave my device?
No. The unit tables are part of the page and the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. With the page already loaded, the converter also works offline.
